Malcolm Snelgrove is a British photographer and photographic artist based on Dartmoor, Devon, whose work explores the relationship between horses, landscape, weather and the natural world.
For more than two decades, he has photographed Dartmoor and its native ponies, developing a deep understanding of the landscape, its changing seasons and the behaviour of its free-roaming herds.
His photography is rooted in observation rather than orchestration. Working with natural light, atmospheric conditions and composition, Malcolm captures moments as they unfold, interpreting the landscape through his camera much as a painter might through brush and canvas.
Increasingly, his work explores the horse not in isolation, but as part of the wider landscape it inhabits - sometimes prominent, sometimes almost disappearing into its surroundings. His photographs seek to convey the atmosphere, character and quiet beauty of the natural world.
Through his ongoing photographic project, Wild Equus, Malcolm also documents wild and semi-wild horses and native ponies, exploring their ecological relationships with the landscapes they inhabit and their contribution to conservation grazing and biodiversity.
His approach combines photography, long-term field observation and storytelling, creating images that are both authentic records and personal artistic interpretations.
